------------------ The list should also include Mary, 'Laughter in the
dark', Defense, Perfection, 'Bend Sinister', 'Ballad of Longwood Glen' and
Ada. One may argue that boundary crossing or approaching and turning around
(as in Mary) is a predominant theme in VN oeuvre. It is almost like Nabokov
was inspired in his art by a boundary of some kind - every time a different
one to overcome. Or to preserve as in translation of 'Eugene Onegin', in
'Speak On Memory', in Lolita.

Subject: Boundary crossings in TT and others

Sorry to be so late with this, but some time ago I came across this in
Durant's Story of Civilization Vol 1: Our Oriental Heritage page 750 and
thought immediately of TT, Glory, Invitation, and La Veneziana in
particular. Akiko may find this interesting. The story concerns a
famous
Chinese artist, "When Wu had lived long enough, says a pretty tale, he
painted a vast landscape, stepped into the mouth of a cave pictured in
it,
and was never seen again."
