TT-8 Preliminary notes

Body
The following notes are cribbed from Brian Boyd's LoA TT edition. Some with
EDCOMMENTs added.

1. Anacreon and "wine's skeleton." Legend says he choked to death on a
grape seed.

EDNOTE. And who is this Ionian?

2. Alyokhin (Alekhin) World chess champion who died in Portugal
(1946)--after choking on unchewed meat.

EDNOTE. Curious that Hugh is writing to TLS about men who die of choking.
HP himself actually dies of asphyxiation rather than fire.

3. Atman. Hinduism--innermost essence of each individual, supreme eternal
self

4.cromlech & menhirs. Boyd notes these are paired in chapter 3 of John
Fowles _French Lieutenant's Woman_, a 1969 bestseller often compared with
Ada.

5. le partcule "de" --not used since would clash with ArdmaDE

6. chamar --peacock fan used as sign of royalty or priesthood in India.

EDNOTE. John Rea has checked a Byron concordance but not found the word
used. See NABOKV-L Archive

7. Ouvre ...mon bucher. Quote from Alfred de Musset poem "A Julie"

EDNOTE. NB Julie figures in TT and NB also the fatal fires.
