Andrew Field's much maligned _VN. The Life and Art of Vladimir Nabokov_
(chapter 21) has an interesting couple of pages (333-4) on a mad and
mystical lodger who roomed (Jan 1951) in one of the homes the Nabokovs
rented while at Cornell. In N's notebooks, the very strange man, a French
instructor, is assigned the pseudonym "Atman." He was eventually
institutionalized. Field suggests he was one prototype for Kinbote. It
seems likely that "the late symbolist writer" for whom HP worked as a
secretary (and created the "cromlech & menhir" gem) has some link with the
earlier non-fictional "Atman."
