I am pleasantly surprised by Brodsky's translation of VN's Demon.
There is a sense of inevitable in ending phrase: 'God ordered me to
sound.'
One recalls that Nabokov criticized Brodsky for lack of economy in
words.
The translation sounds almost like vindication: poetry as a reprieve.
I haven't seen 'Demon' in published VN poems nor its translation in
Brodsky's works.
