Dmitri Nabokov's and Brian Boyd's accounts of Borges's Cornell lecture have
put me in mind of another commemorating visit of Borges's -- to Dublin in
1982 (celebrating Joyce's centenary that year). As John Banville recalled
it, the celebration on Borges's part was reduced to "an old, blind writer,
one of the greatest of his age, sitting alone in a hotel room overlooking an
unseen St. Stephen's Green".
