Re: Fw: Nabokov Ada triviaEDNOTE. Sam Schuman, one of the estimable founding fathers of the Nabokov Society, recalls his earlier note on Nova Zembla rhododendrons. BTW, Rhododenrons do not appear in Ada.

...about which I wrote a little note in the 1981 Newsletter. It is described as "very hardy, with rich red flowers and dark shiny leaves. Always dependable." A more passionate description notes its "blazing, deep fiery-red flowers and exceptionally handsome foliage." A truly Nabokovian plant, one horticultural directive urges the gardener to "give them some shade."

Perhaps what I am about to contribute is already well known, but I just noticed it.
There is a book called Rhododendrons in America, written by an Oregon-based writer (VN spent a little time in Oregon, as we know) whose name is Ted Van Veen.
I don't recall rhododendrons figuring particularly in Ada (or at least not at all as much as in Proust), but I throw out the information on the off chance that it is interesting or important.
Sincerely,
D.K. Holm
