In reply to Sergey Karpukhin's question regarding Richard Ellmann's lack of
any reference to Nabokov in the 1965 edition of his Joyce biography, I have
no information about the 1985 revision of the biography. However, I can
state that when I graded for Ellmann at Yale in his Spring 1970 class on
the Modern British, Irish, and American novel, we did spend one week on
PALE FIRE (or would have, if there hadn't been a campus-wide strike on
behalf of the Black Panthers before we got to Nabokov). Incidentally, we
spent 6 of the 14 weeks of the course on ULYSSES. Hemingway and Fitzgerald
got just one week, together.

John Foster.
