EDNOTE. NABOKV-L and I thank Terry Myers for his magnificent gift to the
St. Petersburg Vladimir Nabokov Museum. I join Terry in hoping that the
suscribers to NABOKV-L will experience the thrill of visiting the Nabokov
Museum so ably directed by Tatyana Ponomaryova in the former St. Petersburg
Nabokov family home. Terry's gift is to be applauded. Terry is also the
founder of the charitable organization "Friends of the Nabokov Museum"
which is now officially designated by the IRS as eligible for
tax-deductible donations. For further information, please contact

Since you are on the subject of the original _Korol', dama, valet- (_King,
Queen, Knave_), I might mention that last week I donated an inscrbed copy
of this book to the Nabokov Museum in St. Petersburg, which is where I feel
it belongs. The inscription is in the form of a poem "Babochki" and the
book is dedicated to one of Nabokov's lepidopterist friends in Berlin,
Nikolai Kardakov. I also donated other Nabokov Russian first editions, some
American firsteditions from the library of Morris Bishop, representative
first editions of other emigre writers, and several issues of emigre
journals. My personal desire is that the museum will one day become a major
center for the study of emigre culture.
I hope that many subscribers to the Nabokv-L will one day visit the
museum. As you know from your own experience, the pilgrimage is worth the
effort. Viewing the rooms that Nabokov describes so precisely and movingly
is truly overwhelming. Another pleasure is getting to know the museum's
director, Tanya Ponomareva, and curator/librarian, Yelena Kuznetsova. They
are knowledgeable, hard-working, and dedicated. And I shouldn't forget all
those wonderful Russian scholars (Averin, Dolinin, etc.) who, for me at
least, have revealed aspects about Nabokov's art that I didn't suspect were
there. Lastly, I shouldn't forget Olga Voronina, without whose heroic
efforts the museum enterprise would have failed a long time ago.
