The works of Milan Kundera--though an emigre writer of vaguely similar
circumstance, he is quite the opposite of Nabokov, (not exactly art for
art's sake) but still a very interesting read.
Perhaps Gabriel Garcia Marquez---100 Years of Solitude?
If you went as far as attempting Delillo, you might as well go for Philip
K. Dick, who is considered more in the realm of SF, but he uses the genre
more than it uses him.
Delillo can be tedious, especially in his latest works. I have read
several of his novels, including The Names and Ratner's Star. I only
truly enjoyed White Noise, myself. It seems he mostly writes about ideas,
which is fine, but leaves me feeling a little alone in the end. I prefer
a clearer voice or a good character over so many ideas, no matter how
worthy.
William S. Burroughs also comes to mind. I would recommend the Place of
Dead Roads or Naked Lunch. Burroughs' life is about as interesting to
read as his fiction. Check out William S. Burroughs: El Hombre Invisible
by Barry Miles.

What about D. H. Lawrence and Solzhenitsyn? Nabokov disliked Lawrence,
and respected Solzhenitsyn without regarding him as a "great" writer. But
compared to some of the "topical trash" (Nabokov, PS to "Lolita") that has
been recommended to the inquirer, Lawrence and Solzhenitsyn are giants.
Try "The Rainbow" and "Cancer Ward".
