Lolita: Age difference and desire

EDNOTE. I am always somewhat bemused by journalistic and academic references to Humber as middle-aged or even old. In fact he is a mere 37 when the affair begins and 39 at its end.

And here's to you, Mrs Robinson
By Paul Theroux
The older woman, immortalised by Anne Bancroft in The Graduate, is every young man's sexual fantasy - this author explains why, even at the age of 61, his enthusiasm for female maturity remains undiminished

"Lolita is the self-conscious, classic study of a middle-aged man infatuated with a teenager. She is a nightmare, we know, and hardly virginal, but that does not deter Humbert from his pursuit. It's the source of the novel's comedy, for we see him as he sees himself, a much mocked but willing victim."
