In "'Despair and Die,' A Note on Nabokov and Shakespeare's Tragedies,"
NOTES ON CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE (January, 1982 - egads, two decades past)
I point out that the paragraph in DESPAIR which echoes Shakespeare's
five-fold "Never" from KING LEAR also includes:
--A Hamlet-like asserthion that ghosts may be frauds,
--The phrase "There is the rub," obviously another HAMLET citation,
--The phrase "forever, and forever, and forever," which perhaps echoes
Macbeth's "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow."
It is pretty clear that Hermann, in this comment, is contemplating the way
to dusty death.
