EDITOR's NOTE. The Russian emigre writer Nina Berberova was a longtime
friend of Nabokov and one of the few writers he favorably reviewed. Her
account of VN may be found in her memoir _The Italics are Mine_. So far as
I know, no one has taken a close look at the relationship.
