Forgive me for responding so belatedly to this long thread. In a
footnote to a forthcoming essay in Nabokov at the Crossroads (edited by
Jane Grayson, Arnold McMillin, and Priscilla Meyer), I link the
description of Gordon's bestial beauty, wreathed gracefully about the
loins with ivy, to Nijinsky's costume for his notorious performance as
the Faun in the Ballets Russes' "Afternoon of a Faun."
