EDITOR's NOTE. Ellen Pifer is the author (among much else) of _Nabokov
and the Novel_ (1980), one of the first studies to dispel the view of VN
as the inhumane trickster-super-stylist.

I met John Barth at a cocktail party many (12?) years ago, and he told
me
how much he admired Nabokov--though his comments on *Ada* suggested, to
me
at least, that his reading of VN was more Barth than Nabokov.
