EDITOR's NOTE. Nassim Berdjis Balestrini is the author of IMAGE IN
VLADIMI NABOKOV'S LAST RUSSIAN NOVEL (DAR), ITS ENGLISH TRANSLATION (THE
GIFT), AND OTHER PROSE WORKS OF THE 1930'S as well as several articles
on VN & music. Her book is a treasure house of VN's imagery and tropes
from the thirties.

the passage Brian Boyd was asking about is from Dar/The Gift (p.26 of
the first Russian ed. published in NY; p.25 of the Penguin edition 1981,
repr. 1988). I don't have any of these editions, let alone one of the
newer ones, handy, but I quote from that passage in my dissertation (see
bottom of p.288 and top of p.289).Best,Nassim
