Dolorology: Nehru & Lolita

The (London) _Times Literary Supplement_ of May 7, 1999 (p. 10) carries a
review of the biography of one Verrier Elwin (1902-1964), an Anglican
missionary who went to India as a young man and went native. He spent much
of his life among the most primitive tribes participating in local
cultural practices (including sexual). With the independence he became a
revered figure with Nehru as his patron. At one meeting
where Elwin was eager to confer about tribal matters, his biographer
reports "Nehru was happier asking him to explain what "a falsie" was,
or sounding out his views on _Lolita_."
