Amazon's Top 100 Books of the Millenium (fwd)

From: Jeff Alexander <jeff_alexander@franklin.com>

After having made it onto several "literary" lists of the best
novels of the century earlier this year, "Lolita" has now been
chosen as the 38th-best book of the millenium (!) in the decidedly
popular Amazon.com reader poll. I thought list members would be
interested and/or amused to see the company it's keeping.

I can imagine Nabokov chuckling at seeing works by several of
his favorite targets (Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, Orwell and Faulkner)
immediately trailing Lolita.

1. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
2. Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
4. The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. K. Rowling
6. The Stand: Complete and Uncut by Stephen King
7. Ulysses by James Joyce
8. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
9. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
10. 1984 by George Orwell
37. On the Road by Jack Kerouac
38. Lolita by Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov
39. Animal Farm by George Orwell
40. The Godfather by Mario Puzo
41. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
42. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
43. Roots by Alex Haley
44. East of Eden by John Steinbeck
45. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
46. Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
47. The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
