Dear Juan,
Though hardly "basic" in any way, the Garland Companion to Nabokov is an
extraordinary volume, including excellent articles on ALL the works (one by
one) by many of our more prominent list members -- I particularly delighted in
Galya's article on the plays, and Dolinin (I hope I have his name right) is
VERY interesting on "the otherworld." But practically anything one might think
of relating to VN has a chapter in this remarkably informative (and extremely
entertaining) book. For your high schoolers, though, it might be a problem:
it's not in every library by any means and purchase price is a steep (but not
unjust) $95 (if I remember right).
