He is called G.H. Orwell because VN was a great admirer of the
science-fiction works of H.G. Wells, and he sees *1984* as a pretty
crude backward step from the master by another author with a "well"
in his name.

Query: Why does VN refer to George Orwell as "G. H. Orwell" in the Foreword
to Invitation to a Beheading? As far as I can see from checking books and
bibliographies, Orwell always went by the name "George Orwell," with no
middle initial.
