EDITOR's NOTE. I am woefully ill-informed about ice-hockey, but recall
that Dmitri Nabokov (VN's son) admiringly mentioned on NABOKV-L a Canadian
ice-hockey star named Nabokov (no relation). Whether John Nabokov,
discussed below, is the same Canadian Nabokov or some other Nabokov, I
don't know. A Kazakstan branch of the clan?

This past Wednesday I found myself rereading _Laughter in the Dark_ during
a flight from Charlotte to Lexinton, Kentucky. I had not read _Laughter_
for several years, and I was once again pleased to see VN deftly describe
in a paragraph or two (nimble sticks, the simultaneously hot and cold air)
my favorite sport, ice hockey. Inspired by this scene, I decided to
attend the AHL match between the Kentucky Thoroughblades and the Syracuse
Crunch, neatly provided for me the following evening by McFate.

Midway through the second period, the Kentucky goalkeeper turned his back
to the crowd to drink from his water bottle, revealing nothing less than
"NABOKOV" above the numbers on his sweater-- and there was a tremendous
roar as the puck slid into the Swedish goal.

Their roster indicates that young John Nabokov, #20, hails from Kazakstan;
I do not know if he is related to our favorite author or to Dmitri
Nabokov, a forward for the New York Islanders from Novosibirsk.
