_Vladimir Nabokov: Sein Lebeb in Bildern und Texten_, ed. Daniela Rippl.
Berlin: Alexander Fest Verlag, 1998. ISBN 3-8286-0071-9.

EDITOR'S NOTE:
Daniela Rippl, a curator at the Munich Literaturhaus, has, with the
assistance of Dmitri Nabokov, culled the Nabokov family photograph archive
in Montreux, and now presents a handsome collection of pictures -- some
familar, some new. Arranged chronologically, the text and photographs fall
into five chapters: Russia; England; Berlin/Paris; America; Montreux. Many
of the pictures are accompanied by appropriate texts from Nabokov's
writings while editor Rippl provides succinct biographical commentary.
The volume is beautifully produced.
Although the text is in German, this should not discourage
"readers" since the Nabokov quotes are all easily recognizable and the
facts of his life familiar. The heart of the volume is in the pictures and
they are well-chosen.
Daniela Rippl has successfully followed in the footsteps of
Ellendea Proffer whose _Vladimir Nabokov: Pictorial Biography_ (Ann
Arbor: Ardis, 1991) was likewise based upon the Nabokov family archives.
Taken together, the two collections provide a striking visual record of
Nabokov's life. Also worth keeping in mind are Gennady Barabtarlo's
stunning pictures of Nabokovian places to be seen on ZEMBLA
