Galya asked me to respond to Suellen's question about how the VN on CNN
section came about. Several weeks ago a person from CNN contacted me
with news that they were planning a fairly extensive in-depth special on
Nabokov on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Basically I acted as a
consultant, putting CNN in contact with Nabokov scholars (our esteemed
co-editors Galya and Don) and steering them toward sources of Nabokov
photographs (Ardis Publishers) and information.
As for who designed the site, the quiz, the map, etc., I have no idea.
This was all CNN's idea, as far as I know. I have to say I think they
did a splendid job and I appreciate all their time and care. They were
exceedingly meticulous in checking their facts and quotes, and though
there are still a few minor gaffes (a grave accent over the 'e' in VERA
instead of an acute accent), the results are very nice to see on a site
with CNN's huge readership.
By the way, for those in the Albany area, I'm told there will be a
fairly long article on VN and his discovery of the Karner Blue butterfly
at Pine Bush in this Sunday's Times Union newspaper. Also, there will be
an article in this (or next) week's edition of the Extra to the Wiener
Zeitung (Vienna) written by Bruno Jaschke.
