Attempts were made to ban "LOLITA", but they were unsuccessful. One of the
Volgograd evenings, instead of being peaceful and cultural, became loud
and scandalous, with the attraction of the forces of the militzija
(Russian Police). Reinforcements of MVD (The Department of the Interior)
were devoid of their legal evening rest and sent to the local Theater of
the Young Spectator. How modern young people behave in a theater, you can
write songs about. Although this time the reason was not the youngsters
amusing themselves, instead it was an adults' uprising. An hour before
the premiere of Nabokov's "Lolita" - at the theater's stairs appeared a
group of people with placards and megaphones. The group turned out to be
quite organized. All the participants of the action were members of the
organization "Russkaja obshchina" ("The Russian Community"). This group,
together with the communist members of Parliament, had been attempting to
achieve a ban on the performance for the entire week before the premiere.
In their opinion, the stage was addressed to "Lolita", as the work itself,
amoral, indecent and harmful to young people. Nevertheless, the
performance was not banned. They could not sabotage the premiere due to
the valiant Volgograd militzija. On the contrary, the spectators were
extremely thrilled by it. The action of the moralists led to a totally
opposite result - tickets to all of the following performances were sold
out.
This is my version. I hope it is understandable to everyone.
P.s I am studying Russian language and literature in Finland and I should
write my thesis on VN's "Istreblenie tiranov" (translation "Tyrants
destroyed"). I try to prove something with the fact that the tyrant is
without a name, without a real identity, so by this fact he keeps his
power... Any ideas to help me with this? And has anyone actually
researched VN's short stories of this period (emigrated in Berlin). Just
do not tell me my work is worthless, my linguist friends have already
tried their best to put it down.
