*** The poll which was the basis for my original question was identified
as the "BOOK WEEK's poll of 'Distinguished Fiction, 1945-1965.'" The list
that I cited in my most recent message was not taken from a poll -- it was
just The Reader's Bookshelf's 1960 editorial suggestions for what the
outstanding novels of the 1950s were. Sorry if it got too confusing. GD***

Are we talking about the Herald Tribune-Washington Post Book World Poll?
If we are, I believe you have some mis-information. That notable poll,
which had Invisible Man followed by Lolita, did not have The
Disenchated, The Wall, The Bad Seed, or Andersonville among the chosen.
I recall Catch-22, Herzog, Good-Bye Columbus and The Sot-Weed Factor on
the list. I'll try to locate the original article in my files at school
on Monday.
It was an impressive list.
