Does anyone know why Appel is so certain Nabokov meant no allusion in the
name he gave Humbert Humbert's lawyer? (See Appel's comment in note 10/1
of his _Annotated Lolita_.) Clarence Darrow and Rufus Choate leap out at
me, and I can't imagine those allusions escaping the notice of our
intrepid Sherlock OR his loyal Watson.
