EDITOR'S NOTE. Below are two references to reviews of VN's STORIES. I
have not seen the VIRGINIA Q.R. one, but did belatedly run across the
White review. White, who has written very well about LOLITA and
whose _Forgetting Elena_ once drew Nabokov's praise, argues that Nabokov's
stories are generally inferior to the fiction. Asserting that N.'s
strength lies in precision of detail and that his stories are all too
often degraded by O.Henry-like final plot twists and "tricks."
