This is a literal nutcracker, for cracking nuts, not a Chaikovsky
ballet. In one chapter of *Speak, Memory* N writes about passing the
nutcracker at family picnics, and Harold Ross's query is sarcastic.
Since the Nabokovs seemed to have a lot of money, property, and
servants, why didn't they have more than one nutcracker?--C. Nicol
