Salvador Dali, mentioned in PNIN as Norman Rockwell's twin brother,
kidnapped by Gypsies, used to paint plaster Venus di Milos, often with
slightly opened drawers (the kind you find in furniture) in their
torsos. There is also a lot of sand, and endless perspectives, but I
don't think the description alludes to a particular work. Dali was a
very popular artist in the 1950s, appreciated more for his cornball
artist-as-magician act than for his strong early work. It sounds to me
like a pop press photo, from LIFE or LOOK or the equivalent, bringing
out the bland side Nabokov detected in Dali.
