Subject: "Mary" Dispute

It seems to me that much as a Nabokov hero, or Nabokov himself, would not
return to the passionately remembered but hopelessly sullied homeland
(except in a nightmare), so Ganin would much rather keep the remembered
image of his old love intact and pure than face MME ALFYOROV and thus
attaint the past and put out one of its most radiant recesses. The epi-
graph to the book implies as much -- to me at least.
