My apologies to Messrs Johnson, Ficklen, and Edelnant. Nabokov in fact
writes "some mnemoptical trick" NOT "mnemonic trick" as I said in my
original question. Thus, color opponency is part of the solution to the
puzzle.
My blunder notwithstanding, the other half of the question remains: why is
it the shutters that Hugh Person remembers as apple green? (The text of
chapter 2 of Transparent Things holds the key.)
