EDITOR'S NOTE: Galya Diment offers Browing - Russian connections beyond
my wildest dreams. But, more specifically, my first thought is that if
the whole door bit is true, it seems likely that Wellesley got the
door to what may have been Browning's childhood home long after his
departure from the house, if not this world. SO the date problem need not
disturb us. DBJ

I am still at a loss about the date, even assuming that such a door
exists and it is at Wellesley. Browning was born in 1812; he published
his first poem -- anonymously -- in 1833. He traveled to Russia in 1834
-- that may be yet another link for Nabokov in connection with Gogol. He
also was in Italy in 1838, when Gogol was there too. By 1836 Browning
was just gaining fame -- Paracelsus was published in 1835. Is it possible
that Wellesley would acquire his door after just one successful work?
