"Based on a modified version of Roman Jakobson's theory of metaphor and
metonymy, structural and thematic analyses of imagery in VN's last
Russian novel, _DAR_/ _THE GIFT_, and in other prose works of the 1930s
show growing complexity in the employment of images which can form
intricate patterns throughout the entire work. The results confirm that
_DAR_/_THE GIFT_ constitutes the culmination of Nabokov's Russian prose.
Some of his Russian works were translated into English soon after their
publication; others were tackled decades later. A comparative analysis of
imagery in Nabokov's auto-translations or rewritten English versions
grants insights into long-term artisitic developments, and it thus opens
doors to further research on the relationship between his Russian and
English works."

"Contents: Structural and thematic analysis of imagery in N's Russian
works of the 1930s and in their English translations. Issues covered: the
development of the artist's mind and skills. The role of sense
perceptions and memory. The relationship between art and nature and art
and ideology. The role of art in man's struggle to understand life and
death."
