EDITOR'S NOTE. It would indeed be interesting to learn the answer to
Professor Vesterman's <VESTERMAN@zodiac.rutgers.edu> query below and even
more so to see how various translators have handled the numerous
anagrammatic, sonic, and "iconic" ploys VN worked into his original
Russian text. Robert Hughes in an article and I in _Worlds in Regression_
have taken a close look at how Dmitri and his father handle these
translation problems. The draft of Dmitri Nabokov's English translation
with VN's alterations now in the Nabokov Archive at the Library or
Congress was not available at the time.

gets done with "Where, where..." M'sieur Pierre mimicked him.
You know where. Off to do chop-chop." (Chapter 19)? I can't
imagine the last part in anything other than English, not that
this is an objection to the project in particular or to
translation in general.
