The Nabokov community mourns the passing away of Professor Gennady Barabtarlo, a deeply respected Nabokov and Pushkin scholar and a beloved mentor and colleague.  Feb. 15, 1949 — Feb. 24, 2019

Gennady Barabtarlo, 70, died peacefully at home on Feb. 24, 2019.

Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 1510 Audubon Drive, Columbia. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Columbia City Cemetery. A memorial service is planned for a later date.

A renowned literary scholar, author and editor of numerous books, Gennady Barabtarlo retired as professor emeritus last year from the University of Missouri, where he taught Russian Studies for more than 30 years. He devoted most of his scholarship to the work of Vladimir Nabokov and Aleksandr Pushkin, and the International Vladimir Nabokov Society named its essay prize in his honor in 2019. His brilliant mind and kind and generous spirit will be deeply missed by family and friends, students and colleagues around the world.

Professor Barabtarlo is survived by his wife, Alla, of Columbia; daughter, Maria (Masha) Sapp (husband, Michael), of St. Louis; granddaughter, Jessie Elena Sapp; and sister, Dina Birnbaum (husband, Alan), and family of South Bend, Indiana.
