Golly, what a shock. I never met Stan, but spoke with him on the phone once when I was in London - what a delight he was. He enlivened many a discussion on the List - and will, to be rhymingly trite, be missed. Good night, darling Scouse.

It is with a sense of disbelief that I note the passing last month of Stan Kelly-Bootle, Nabokv-L friend and long-time contributor.  Stan's wide-ranging, heterodox, and polymathic approaches to Nabokov were filled with wit and energy.  It is hard to imagine such a lively spirit transitioning out of this world.

This obituary includes a link to Stan's song "Liverpool Lullaby."

Thanks to John Chettoe for sharing the news.

[EDNOTE.  In the words of Stan's own "Liverpool Lullaby": "There's no one can take his place."   -- SES.]

Dear List,

It is with great sorrow that I report the death of Stan Kelly-Bootle, a
longtime N-L contributor.  Stan was a fount of knowledge about languages,
mathematics, computer science, sport, music, entertainment, and British
culture, among many other things, and his spirited contributions to the
List were always amusing and informative.

John Chettoe sent the following news of Stan's death:

Not sure this has been picked up on the list, but that indefatigable
polymath and contributor to the list Stan Kelly-Bootle has just passed away
at the age of 84.

He led a most remarkable life, as witnessed by the obituaries I have read
in the UK. One of those people who lived many different lives at the same
time. I attach a link to the obituary in The Guardian:

Yours,
