Mo Cohen: Maybe it's helpful to note that in The Apes of God Julius Ratner is really John Rodker, author of Adolphe, and Lewis's former publisher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolphe_1920

JM: The curious title, I see, is "Adolphe 1920:" (1929).
It doesn't seem to be related to Benjamin Constant's "Adolphe" (1816).
