If my memory has not led me astray, I believe that Andrew Field queried
VN about "Nikto b" and Botkin, but VN denied the connection. I think
this is in some correspondence that survives in the Berg collection.
Does anyone else recall this? That said, I don't think we should feel
obliged to believe VN's denials and/or explanations. There have been
other cases (skoramis, for example) where VN's gloss turned out to be
misleading.
