This is extremely obscure.
Even if I failed to guess the main secret in Fame, my observations regarding the allusions in Slava to Pushkin and Gogol are not completely worthless.
Re potustoronnost': just as we can not see the back side of the moon (according to Gogol's madman, the moon is inhabited by people's noses), the back of Gogol's chimney-sweep is invisible to ordinary readers. One expects it to be soot black and is surprised to find out that it is clean (but I do not insist on my solution).
