On February 5, 1887, an unsigned editorial in The Ranter (the usually so sarcastic and captious Chose weekly) described Mascodagama's performance as 'the most imaginative and singular stunt ever offered to a jaded music-hall public.' (Ada, 1.30)
Van's stage name blends Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese navigator who discovered the sea route from Portugal around the continent of Africa to India, with mask. Vasco da Gama and masks are mentioned in Merezhkovski's "The Resurrection of Gods. Leonardo da Vinci":
