Lyubov's former midwife, Eleonora Shnap appears at Antonina Pavlovna's birthday party wearing a pince-nez (The Event, Act Two). Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (the author of Kashtanka and Lady with a Dog, whose wife had a dog called Shnap) was often portrayed wearing his pince-nez:
