Николадзе. Что такое? Я ничего не понимаю... Какая дура? Какой убийца? Что случилось? (The Event, Act Two)
Pyotr Nikalaevich asks Lyubov' if she is quaking with fear and bids her to show him her knee tendons. He says that in his youth (в молодости) he fell in love with a girl because of her tender knee tendons and adds that this killer (Barbashin, Lyubov's former lover) knows which side his bread is buttered.

Уродики, уродища, уроды
Весь день озёрные мутили воды.
Теперь над озером ненастье, мрак,
В траве — лягушечий зелёный квак.
Огни на дачах гаснут понемногу,

Khodasevich's first collection of poetry was entitled "Молодость" ("Youth," 1908). The setting of this mature poem (included in "The European Night") is a lake shore in the country (at her birthday party Antonina Pavlovna reads her latest fairy tale from the cycle "Illumined Lakes"). A distant gramophone plays Shalyapin. The purblind, big-mouthed gnome with a lantern examins what the lascivious brides who cling to their suitors have under their skirts.
